"Poplar trees emit fragrance, and peony bears big pomegranate." Recently, the author came across these unique seedlings at the Qianqiao Village Science and Technology Demonstration Park in Qiaobu Town, Huairou District. This spring, the Beijing Green Valley Biotechnology Development Center partnered with Qianqiao Village to establish a cloning seedling demonstration base. The facility uses plant cloning technology—a high-efficiency propagation method—to grow new seedlings. By taking buds and leaves from plants and multiplying them rapidly in the lab, they then transplant them into greenhouses to acclimate before moving them to the field.
So far, more than ten types of seedlings have been successfully cultivated, including Fragrant Euonymus, Peony Pomegranate, and the fast-growing Meihe Poplar. The scented poplar is a clone of regular poplars and clove trees. It has large leaves that release a pleasant aroma in the morning or during rainy weather. It doesn't shed much in spring and is resistant to cold and pests. The Peony Pomegranate is a hybrid of peony and pomegranate, extending the blooming period of peonies while also producing large pomegranates. The fast-growing poplar can be matured in just five years, with high protein content in its leaves, making it useful as animal feed and for paper production.
This year, 250 acres of land have been allocated for the base, and over 10 million strains of Meihe fast-growing poplars will be planted in the deserts of Wushenqi, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. These trees are expected to become key species for local greening efforts, helping to combat desertification and improve the environment. The project not only promotes sustainable development but also offers practical solutions for both ecological restoration and agricultural use.
