Indoor Foliage New Variety

Duck foot wood, also known as *Schefflera octophylla* or "Jiang mother," is a unique and attractive evergreen plant that thrives in shaded environments. It features delicate, palmately compound leaves with a distinct shape—often lanceolate, elliptic, or long ovate. This wild plant is not only visually appealing but also resilient, making it an excellent choice for indoor bonsai cultivation. The Shantou Noodle Garden Scenic Area has successfully cultivated this species, showcasing its potential as a stunning foliage plant for ornamental purposes. The duck foot wood typically grows to a height of 2 to 5 meters, with a spreading canopy. Its small, yellow-green flowers bloom from September to December, followed by purple berries. The plant is commonly harvested between November and February of the next year, when the tree stumps can be carefully excavated and placed in shaded, well-ventilated areas. Seedlings grow quickly under proper conditions. To shape it into a beautiful bonsai, regular pruning and selective bud removal are essential. This helps maintain its elegant form and highlights its natural beauty. As a shade-tolerant plant, it should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Instead, it prefers indirect light and should avoid sudden changes in lighting conditions. For potted duck foot wood, a well-draining soil mix is crucial. A combination of breathable sand and pond soil works well. After planting, applying a balanced liquid fertilizer or mixed fertilizer once or twice a month supports healthy growth. Watering should be done regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, ensuring steady development and vibrant foliage.
