Fish cultivation techniques in autumn

Autumn is an ideal season for fish growth due to the suitable water temperature. Cultivating fingerlings during this period is crucial, and the following are key techniques to ensure successful autumn fingerling farming: First, it's essential to clear the pond. After 2-3 months of fish cultivation, the water quality deteriorates, natural food sources decrease, and harmful organisms increase. Therefore, when autumn arrives, it’s important to move the fish to sterilized, clean ponds. Before moving the fish, the original pond should be treated with 75–100 kilograms of quicklime per mu, and then fertilized using traditional methods to prepare it for future use. Second, sorting the fingerlings by size is important. Larger fingerlings have a higher appetite and stronger feeding ability, which can lead to smaller ones being outcompeted for food. To prevent this, larger fish (over 16 cm) should be placed in adult fish ponds, while smaller fish should be raised in separate, dedicated pools. Third, thinning the stock is necessary based on pond size, depth, and water conditions. For a pond with a depth of about 1.5 meters, it's recommended to keep 4,000–6,000 fingerlings per acre. These fish will grow from 7–8 cm to 13–16 cm by the end of the season. Fourth, proper feeding is vital. For grass carp, green feed such as duckweed, tender grass, or aquatic plants should be the main diet, with concentrates added in moderation. Each day, 80–100 kg of green feed is needed for every 10,000 grass carp, along with 1.5–2.5 kg of fine feed. Green feed should be cast first to avoid competition among fish. In polyculture systems, regular fertilization is essential—80–120 kg of fermented manure per mu every 10–15 days. Water transparency should be maintained between 30–35 cm. If grass carp are the main species, fertilization should take priority over feeding, with additional feed applied every 5–10 days. Lastly, daily pond inspections are critical. Monitoring fish behavior and feeding patterns, checking water quality, and changing water regularly helps maintain a healthy environment. New water should be added once a week, and feeding areas should be cleaned to remove leftover food and plant debris. Every half month, 0.5 kg of bleaching powder should be spread around the feeding area, or other medications should be used to prevent disease. Fish should be fed regularly, and any signs of illness should be addressed promptly.
