Bai Yongmei

Scientific Name: Exochorda racemosa

Common Name: Gourd Fruit

Family: Rosaceae

Exochorda racemosa is native to central and eastern China, growing naturally along the Yellow River, Huaihe River, and Yangtze River basins. This plant thrives in sunny conditions and prefers fertile, moist soil but is also resilient to drought and poor soil conditions. It has strong cold tolerance, making it suitable for a range of climates.

It is a deciduous shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights of up to 5 meters. The branches are brown and slightly angular. The leaves are alternate, elliptical to ovate-elliptical in shape. The flowers appear in terminal racemes, with 6 to 12 white blossoms that measure 2.5 to 3.5 cm in diameter. They bloom in April, creating a beautiful display reminiscent of plum blossoms in full bloom. The fruits are obovate to spherical capsules, maturing in September.

Propagation can be done through seeds or cuttings. Seeds are usually sown in September and transplanted in March of the following year. Cuttings are best taken from dormant shoots before the buds begin to open in early spring.

Known for its elegant appearance, Exochorda racemosa adds a touch of beauty to gardens, especially when planted at the edge of lawns or near rocks. It also performs well along pathways or in front of structures. This genus includes approximately five species, with commonly cultivated varieties being E. giraldii and E. serratifolia. Its ornamental value makes it a popular choice for landscape design and garden enthusiasts looking to add a delicate, flowering shrub to their collection.
