Bracken, also known as fern, dragon claw, or ruyi, is a perennial herb that typically grows up to one meter in height. It has an underground rhizome and produces leaves from these stems. When the new leaves emerge, they are curled inward and covered with dense hairs. As they unfurl, the leaves become three-pinnate, with long petioles. The fronds contain spore clusters, which serve as reproductive structures. The young leaves, buds, and tender stems of bracken are rich in nutrients, including protein, fats, amino acids, vitamins, carbohydrates, and essential trace elements. The rhizomes contain 35% to 40% starch, making them highly nutritious. Bracken is naturally grown without pesticides or fertilizers, making it a clean, low-calorie, and eco-friendly food source. With rising living standards, the demand for bracken has increased significantly. Traditionally, it was consumed as a wild vegetable, but now, due to growing market needs, artificial cultivation has become more common. Bracken can be cultivated in various environments, such as small plastic sheds, greenhouses, solar energy-efficient greenhouses, and heated greenhouses. Different methods can be chosen based on local conditions. Cultivating bracken in plastic greenhouses allows for year-round fresh harvests, offering high economic returns. Key cultivation steps include: 1. Site preparation and planting: Apply 5,000 kg of well-rotted organic fertilizer per 667 square meters (1 acre). Ensure the roots are intact and undamaged during planting. Straighten the root system before planting and water thoroughly after planting. 2. Covering and management: Before the ground freezes, maintain the temperature under the film around 20°C. Avoid exceeding 30°C and do not water the seedlings at this stage—only focus on temperature control. After 15 days, the temperature can be gradually increased to 25°C. 3. Harvesting and processing: Bracken sprouts within 20 days, and the first harvest can be done 10 to 15 days later. The ideal harvesting time is when the young leaves begin to unfold, and a harvest should occur every 7 days.
