Citrus resin disease, also known as black spot disease, is one of the most damaging diseases affecting citrus crops today. The trees are highly vulnerable to cold damage and physical injuries, which makes it difficult for them to maintain strong growth. When the pathogen infects the branches, it's referred to as "resin disease," while infection of the leaves is called "Panpibo" or "black spot" when it affects the fruit surface. This disease primarily targets young fruits and shows symptoms during the fruit enlargement stage, significantly impacting the fruit's appearance, overall health, and yield. The critical periods for control are before spring bud break, during the flowering stage (about two-thirds of the bloom), and in the early stages of fruit development.
To manage this disease, affected areas should be scraped down to the xylem, and the exposed bark should be burned out. After that, a suitable fungicide should be applied. It's recommended to spray the trees three times between June and August, depending on the rainfall between each application. Typically, one spray is sufficient when cumulative rainfall reaches 200–300 mm. Effective fungicides include 80% Dasheng M-45 diluted 600 times (effective against both rust and black spot) or 70% mancozeb at a 500-fold dilution. Regular monitoring and timely treatment are essential to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure healthy crop production.
