Magnolia tree varieties and characteristics

Magnolia trees are widely planted as street trees in many cities, and now it's the time for the Guangyu Orchid to bloom. The sight of these beautiful flowers adds a charming touch to urban landscapes. Scientifically known as *Magnolia grandiflora*, this tree is often called "Lotus Magnolia" due to its large, lotus-like blossoms. Native to the Americas, it's also sometimes referred to as "Yang Yulan." This evergreen tree has glossy, leathery leaves that measure 10–20 cm long, with a slightly curled edge. It can grow up to 30 meters tall, though common varieties usually reach 16–23 meters. The flowers are large and fragrant, typically white in color, with 6 petals and a diameter of 20–30 cm. They bloom from May to July, and their seeds are enclosed in red, fleshy fruits that ripen between September and October. The canopy is conical and dense, giving the tree a majestic appearance. As an ornamental species, Guangyulan is highly valued for its beauty and environmental benefits, making it a popular choice for city planting and garden landscaping. Another notable variety is the Purple Magnolia (*Magnolia liliiflora*), which is a deciduous shrub reaching up to 3 meters in height. It features obovate or elliptic-ovate leaves and large, bell-shaped flowers that open either before or at the same time as the leaves. The petals range from purple to purplish red on the outside and white inside. This species is cultivated in Huangchuan, Henan Province, where it blooms three to four times a year, each blooming period lasting 20–35 days. Its bark, leaves, and flowers are used in traditional medicine for treating headaches, sinusitis, and high blood pressure. *Magnolia soulangeana*, also known as Cinnabar Magnolia or Purple Magnolia, is a hybrid of *M. denudata* and *M. liliiflora*. It grows as a small deciduous tree, reaching 6–10 meters in height. Its flowers are large, bell-shaped, and fragrant, with 6–9 tepals in shades of purple or red on the outside and white inside. It blooms from February to March, and its fruits ripen between September and October. This species prefers acidic, well-drained soil and is relatively cold-resistant, making it suitable for a wide range of climates. Red Magnolia is a newly developed variety that blooms three times a year—spring, summer, and autumn. It is particularly valuable in regions where flowering plants are scarce during the summer months. This species thrives in sunny, fertile conditions but requires careful watering to avoid root rot. In southern areas, planting should be done on raised beds, while in the north, alkaline soils can be treated with ferrous sulfate solutions to improve growth. Due to its fleshy roots, transplanting requires extra care. One rare and unique variety is *Magnolia* "Sunspire," a deciduous shrub known for its yellow flowers, which are extremely uncommon among magnolias. Yellow Magnolia blooms late in spring, avoiding the risk of early frost damage. It prefers full sun to partial shade and does not require frequent pruning. Its golden-yellow blossoms make it a standout in any garden. Magnolia trees have been prized for centuries for their vibrant flowers, fragrance, and medicinal properties. They are used to treat respiratory issues and lower blood pressure. Additionally, they serve as valuable ornamental plants and are widely cultivated across China, including in provinces such as Hebei, Hubei, Hunan, Shandong, Anhui, and others. In Huangchuan County, Henan Province, the ideal climate and soil conditions create the perfect environment for high-quality magnolia cultivation. With an average annual temperature of 14.8°C and a pH range of 5.5–7.5, the region is well-suited for growing these beautiful trees.
