The production process of alginate typically involves several key steps:
**(I) Process Flow**
Raw materials such as kelp and seaweed undergo a series of treatments including soaking, digestion, filtration, acid gelation, alkali treatment, dehydration, and drying to produce the final product.
**(II) Operational Points**
1. First, the raw algae are soaked in a 0.8% to 1% formaldehyde solution for 8 to 24 hours. This step helps fix the natural pigments and prevents discoloration. Afterward, the residual formaldehyde is thoroughly washed away with clean water.
2. Once the pigment is fixed, the material is digested using sodium carbonate. A small amount of formaldehyde solution is then added, followed by gentle heating to aid the reaction.
3. The mixture is first filtered through a coarse cloth. If necessary, a second fine filtration is performed to ensure a clear and pure solution.
4. The filtered solution is then treated with industrial-grade sulfuric or hydrochloric acid to lower the pH to around 2. At this stage, the sodium alginate begins to solidify into a gel-like substance. After a few minutes, the gel is removed and washed to eliminate any excess acid.
5. The washed gel is then placed into a saturated sodium carbonate solution, which converts the alginic acid into its sodium salt form. The pH is adjusted to between 8 and 9, and the mixture is stirred gently to ensure uniformity.
6. Finally, the alginate is dehydrated and dried using alcohol, ensuring a stable and long-lasting product.
7. The finished product should be stored in an inflated condition to prevent clumping and maintain quality. Currently, in China, alginate is typically packaged in plastic bags or cardboard boxes for distribution and storage.
This detailed process ensures that the final product meets high-quality standards and is suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial uses.
