Let’s talk organization—because I can’t help myself. It’s kind of a personality flaw, but hey, it keeps things running smoothly, right? At least in theory.
My 3-year-old son recently started preschool. He’s absolutely loving it, and it gives me some much-needed time to focus on our newborn or maybe catch up on chores like folding laundry. Honestly, either option works for me!
But here’s where things get interesting: what do preschool projects and organizational OCD have in common? Well, after just two short weeks, we already had a growing pile of art projects and assignments. For a 2-day-a-week preschool, this seemed... excessive. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like when he’s in kindergarten full-time!
To be honest, not everything made the cut. A worksheet where he scribbled one line? Sorry, buddy, but it didn’t quite make the grade. On the other hand, his Mr. Potato Head creation representing the five senses? That one earned its spot in the “keeper†pile for sure!
The pile kept growing, and let’s just say it became a source of mild frustration. How was I supposed to manage this? Enter Pinterest—where else? There were tons of creative solutions involving storage bins. Love those things. Rubbermaid might as well be my second home after four moves in five years. No unpacking art supplies again? Sign me up.
And then, inspiration struck. Behold:
One filing bin, a pack of hanging file folders, and a bit of leftover paint were all I needed. Problem solved! Now, I simply file away each treasure so that when he moves out someday, I can hand him this bin filled with memories of his school days. For items that don’t fit, I’ll take photos and print them out to include in the same system—keeping everything together.
These photos showcase the setup:
It’s working beautifully. Maybe next year, I’ll even teach him how to file his own work. Imagine the pride he’d feel!
But here’s my new challenge: where should I put this bin so it’s easily accessible without becoming a nuisance? Any advice would be appreciated!
Until next time,
