Let’s just say I have a bit of an obsession with organization—like, to the point where it sometimes borders on unhealthy. But hey, I can admit that, even if I can’t quite kick the habit.
My 3-year-old son started preschool a few weeks ago, and it’s been such a game-changer for both of us. He loves it, and I get a couple of mornings each week to focus on the baby or finally tackle that never-ending pile of laundry. You know, the important stuff.
But here’s the thing—what do these two things have in common? Well, after just two weeks of preschool, we already had a mountain of art projects and schoolwork piling up faster than I could figure out what to do with it. And this is only two days a week! How am I supposed to handle five-day-a-week kindergarten?
To be honest, some of the “treasures†barely made it into the stack. Like those worksheets where my son scribbled one line on an apple? Not making the cut. But his Mr. Potato Head creation representing the five senses? Totally staying. I mean, how could I resist something so cute?
As the pile grew, so did my frustration. Something had to change—and fast. Enter Pinterest, as always.
I came across a ton of ideas involving tubs. Tubs are my jam—I swear, I should invest in Rubbermaid stock. After all, we’ve moved four times in the last five years, and there are certain things I don’t want to unpack again. Ever.
And then, this happened.
All it took was one filing tub, a pack of hanging file folders, and a little leftover paint I had lying around. Now, instead of stressing over what to do with all the schoolwork, I simply file everything away. When my son eventually moves out and starts his own life, I can just hand over this tub filled with his school memories. For anything too bulky to fit, I plan to take photos and print them out to include in the same system. Everything will stay together!
This setup has solved so many problems. Next year, maybe I’ll even teach him how to file his own work. Imagine the pride he’d feel knowing he’s part of keeping his own memories organized!
But here’s my one lingering issue: Where should I store this tub so I don’t forget to use it throughout the year? Any suggestions?
Oh, and side note—now that I’ve got this system down, maybe I’ll apply it to organizing my own stuff. Baby steps, right?
I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips on keeping school memories organized. Let me know in the comments below!
