Welcome to our cozy bedroom! It's definitely one of my favorite spaces in the house. The room has a calming vibe, with a clean and modern touch, but it's still warm enough to light some candles and relax after a long day.

When we started planning this space, we had a few things in mind. First, since we're renting, we wanted to avoid making any permanent changes. Luckily, the existing paint and carpet were already pretty neutral, so we could keep the basic structure intact and focus on temporary decor that we can take with us when we move. And boy, were we glad we did because, as it turns out, we'll be starting fresh in a new place next month! I guess we got this room tour done just in time.

Our second goal was to make this room both a master bedroom and a nursery for our newborn. Our older kids usually slept in our room for the first year, so sharing the space seemed like the best option for our family. We didn't want the room to feel overly "babyish," but we also didn't want to miss out on adding some fun elements for our little one. Finding the right balance was important to me.

OUR MASTER BEDROOM AND NURSERY NOOK

When we were inspired by the design board I created for this room, we stayed pretty true to it, but made a few tweaks. Instead of a single bench at the foot of the bed, we opted for three portable ottomans. They're great for our kids to move around—whether they're reading stories or helping out at the changing table—and they're much more flexible for our growing family. We also kept costs down by making some substitutions and avoiding a traditional bedding set. Instead, we mixed and matched blankets and pillows, including my hospital bag pillowcases. In our climate, it works perfectly.

One thing I'm really excited about in our new place is the increase in natural light in our master bedroom. Our current room tends to feel a bit dark sometimes… especially in that nook area where there's no window. But lack of light also gave us more wall space to play with.

The adorable knit bird collection and the yellow/white chevron blanket are from Bellus Threads. For the mobile, I just hung the bird pieces from a stick the kids found in the yard and wrapped it in yarn for an extra pop of color.

I keep some of my favorite candles from Anthropologie nearby, along with this incredible hand cream and my latest lip balm obsession from a recent Birchbox delivery for nighttime use.

One of the less "babyish" pieces in the room is this vintage mannequin we picked up at a garage sale last year. I absolutely love having it in our space—it currently holds most of my necklaces.

We wanted a way to display Skylar's outfits in a cute and functional way, so my husband quickly put together this solution using an Ikea shelf and a $4 curtain rod. It's one of my favorite DIY projects in the room—it came in under $20.
