How to make the roof garden safe in summer

The roof garden is constructed on flat roofs, platforms, or parapets of buildings. Compared to traditional ground gardens, the ecological conditions in a roof garden are typically harsher, making it more challenging to maintain plants, especially during the hot summer months. Having worked in the maintenance of rooftop greenery for many years, I have accumulated several practical experiences that I would like to share with you now. **Early Fertilization Based on Phenology** Roof surfaces are usually made of concrete, which absorbs and retains heat effectively. Taking advantage of this characteristic, I recommend applying fertilizer early in spring—using diluted manure, alternating between root feeding and foliar spraying. This method helps rooftop flowers enter their peak blooming season earlier than those in regular landscaping. Flowering trees and shrubs also bloom earlier and have a longer flowering period. However, during the high-temperature season, it's best to avoid root fertilization. If plants show signs of nutrient deficiency, applying a diluted liquid fertilizer or micro-nutrients in the evening, when the leaves can absorb them more efficiently, will greatly benefit their growth. **Shade and Cooling Measures** In summer, roof gardens are exposed to intense sunlight, high temperatures, and strong winds, which increase transpiration and make plants more susceptible to sunburn. To protect the plants, it’s essential to take preventive measures early. In early April, we install shade nets over greenhouses or use fixed windproof mesh and external shading nets (with a shading rate of over 70%) for areas without greenhouses. When the weather turns hot, we water both day and night, and spray water on the leaves multiple times to increase humidity and reduce heat stress. **Soil Supplement** Frequent watering can cause some soil loss and shrinkage, leading to cracking and insufficient planting depth. When the soil level drops significantly, it's important to add fresh potting soil promptly. This helps maintain healthy root development and supports better plant growth. **Regular Weeding and Pest Control** Maintaining cleanliness in potted plants and the garden is crucial. Regular weeding, along with careful monitoring for pests and diseases, ensures a healthy environment. Observing plant growth closely and managing it properly at all times is key to long-term success in rooftop gardening. By following these practices, you can create a thriving and beautiful roof garden, even under challenging environmental conditions.
