If a tractor becomes stuck in a paddy field, it not only significantly reduces work efficiency but can also cause serious damage to the machine's components. To prevent slipping and getting stuck, it's important to take several precautions:
First, always assess the depth of the mud in the field. Pay extra attention to areas with ponds or ditches, and mark them using branches or other visible markers if needed. This helps avoid unexpected deep spots that can trap the tractor.
Second, use non-slip tires, high-pattern paddy wheels, or special iron wheels designed for muddy conditions. Make sure they are installed correctly—incorrect installation can lead to severe slippage, sinking, and poor traction.
Third, adjust the working depth and width of the tractor based on its condition and the mud depth. Overloading the machine can cause it to slip or sink. When turning, raise the implement promptly to reduce resistance and prevent unnecessary strain.
Fourth, maintain a water level of 3 to 5 centimeters in the field during plowing, weeding, or rotavating. Insufficient water can cause the drive wheels to stick in the mud, leading to slipping.
Fifth, when moving across the field, try to use a hoe to level low areas. This helps prevent ridges from blocking the tractor’s chassis and causing slippage. For fields that are 30 cm high, it's advisable to reverse the tractor to avoid rear wheel slippage.
Sixth, if you notice the front wheels sinking, stop immediately and retreat. Avoid pushing forward into deeper mud, as this can worsen the situation.
Seventh, if one drive wheel starts to slip, engage the differential lock to drive both rear wheels together and move out of the soft area. Once free, disengage the lock. If your tractor doesn't have a differential lock, you can apply unilateral braking by gently pressing the brake on the slipping side. This forces the non-slipping wheel to rotate, helping the tractor escape the trap.
In case the tractor becomes fully stuck, follow these steps: First, remove any attached farm equipment to reduce the load. Second, try turning the steering wheel or swiveling the front end to find a way out. Third, avoid flooring the accelerator and lifting the clutch in an attempt to "power through"—this can make the situation worse. Fourth, use a winch method: place a wooden stake about 5 meters ahead, tie a steel cable to it, and secure the other end to the tractor’s drive wheel or crankshaft. Crank the engine to pull the tractor free. Fifth, if the tractor is too deep and cannot be pulled out this way, seek help from a stronger tractor to extract it.
By following these steps, you can minimize the risk of getting stuck and improve the safety and efficiency of your operations in muddy conditions.
