Mulberry Winter Fertilization

In winter, mulberry trees enter a dormant phase, during which their biological activities slow down significantly. Although they require less fertilizer compared to other seasons, the impact of winter fertilization is highly effective. First, it helps improve the structure of the soil in the mulberry orchard, enhancing permeability and increasing organic matter content. Second, it stimulates microbial activity in the soil, promoting weathering and ultimately boosting soil fertility. Third, it helps raise the ground temperature, reducing the risk of frost damage to the orchard. Winter fertilization should be carried out before the leaves fall and before the soil freezes. It is typically applied in combination with mulching. The method involves digging trenches about 50 cm wide and 40–45 cm deep, alternating them across the garden. These trenches are rotated each year to ensure even distribution of nutrients. After applying the fertilizer, it's important to cover the area properly to maximize its benefits. The recommended fertilizers include slow-release organic materials such as compost, farm manure, and human waste. Apply approximately 2,500 to 3,000 kilograms per acre, along with 30 kg of superphosphate. For acidic soils, it's advisable to add 50 kg of lime per acre to neutralize the acidity and create a more favorable growing environment for the mulberry trees. This well-planned approach ensures long-term soil health and supports the trees’ growth when spring arrives.
