Carbon dioxide strawberry new fertilizer

In the Hong Qun Strawberry Breeding Farm, a new piece of equipment has been introduced. The farm owner, Luo Hongqun, explained that this is known as a carbon dioxide generator. It was provided by the Hangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences to boost the yield of the Datian Strawberry variety. In simpler terms, plants use carbon dioxide as a kind of fertilizer, much like how they rely on sunlight for growth. Since strawberries are grown in greenhouses, where the air is more enclosed, the natural levels of CO2 are often too low. Therefore, supplementing with carbon dioxide can significantly improve their growth and production. According to a researcher from the Hangzhou Academy who is conducting field tests, providing two hours of CO2 during sunny days is enough to make a difference. Based on the academy's trials, this method increased the yield by over 25%. If the same level of improvement can be achieved in open fields, it would be a major breakthrough for farmers. Yan Ya, one of the researchers involved, noted that this technology is still uncommon in China, mainly due to high costs. In some large-scale modern farms, CO2 is supplied through cylinders, which many small farmers cannot afford. To address this issue, the team is now testing a more affordable device. It uses a corrosion-resistant plastic tank filled with diluted sulfuric acid, which is then added into a container holding ammonium bicarbonate. The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide, which is slowly released into the greenhouse via a dropper system. What remains in the tank after the reaction is ammonium sulfate, a useful fertilizer that can be reused. This way, nothing goes to waste, and the entire process is both efficient and cost-effective. The cost per mu (a traditional Chinese unit of area) is only around 200 yuan, making it an attractive solution for small-scale farmers. This innovation not only improves crop yield but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices by minimizing waste and reducing dependency on expensive inputs. As the project continues to develop, it could serve as a model for other farms looking to adopt similar low-cost, eco-friendly technologies.
