Squid is a semi-hibernating fish. When the water temperature drops below 15°C, carp stop feeding and enter a state of hibernation by breathing very slowly. As autumn sets in and temperatures gradually decrease, the feeding activity and movement of the squid become weaker. Therefore, it's crucial to enhance management during the autumn and winter seasons. Here are the main strategies:
First, increase the amount of high-fat feed given to the carp. This helps them build up fat reserves for energy consumption during hibernation. High-fat food options include mealworms, crickets, and fly larvae. Try to feed them as much as possible to ensure they have enough energy to last through the cold months.
Second, carefully capture the squid before winter. These creatures tend to burrow into the silt at the bottom of the pond, especially when the temperature drops. For this reason, it's important to catch them before the winter season begins. When catching, first drain the water from the pond and remove the top layer of mud. Then, gently scoop out the silt using your hands—avoid using shovels or sharp tools that might damage the squid. Also, make sure to keep smaller individuals to allow them to breed and lay eggs for the next year.
Third, improve overwintering conditions by using a deep-water method. Maintain a water depth of 50–70 cm in the pond and add aquatic plants like duckweed. When ice forms on the surface, break it to maintain oxygen flow. This helps keep the water temperature stable and ensures sufficient oxygen levels. Once the squid starts hibernating, allow the pond to dry slightly but keep the soil moist. Cover the pond floor with plastic nets to prevent predators like cats and dogs from preying on the fish. In extremely cold weather, cover the pond surface with straw or other plant materials to provide insulation. When spring arrives and the temperature rises above 15°C, start feeding the fish again to support their growth and recovery.
