How much food should everyone eat every day? According to Professor Yang Zeyi, who helped develop meal plans for Olympic athletes, there's a simple formula: 5 times your body weight in kilograms. For example, if you weigh 80 kg, you should consume 400 grams of staple food daily. This is the basic foundation of a balanced diet. Not eating enough can lead to fatigue and even mental exhaustion. Office workers, for instance, often feel dizzy or tired during busy days—not just from work stress, but also from not consuming enough carbohydrates. The brain relies on glucose for energy, and it cannot efficiently use fat or protein. Staple foods are the main source of this essential fuel. Eating enough of them helps keep the mind sharp and alert.
Professor Yang compares staple food to liquefied gas used in cooking—efficient and clean-burning, with no leftover waste. In contrast, eating too much meat is like burning coal, which leaves behind "ash" and makes the body work harder. Many people try to lose weight by cutting out staple foods, but that’s not a healthy approach. A balanced diet includes vegetables, fruits, some protein, and a moderate amount of carbohydrates. Even those with diabetes should not completely eliminate staple food. Professor Yang himself has lived with diabetes for years, yet he always eats at least 100 grams of staple food daily. Alongside 250 grams of vegetables, fruits, and milk, this is a well-rounded and nutritious way to eat. ——Midi Medical Network
