Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) is a member of the nightshade family, commonly known as a multi-branched shrub with approximately 80 species. Most of these species are native to the Americas, with the highest diversity found in South America. In Eurasia, there are about 10 species, primarily distributed in Central Asia. Within China, there are seven varieties and three subspecies, mainly found in northern and northwestern regions. Provinces such as Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Xinjiang, and Qinghai all have wild populations. The central distribution areas include the Hexi Corridor, Qaidam Basin, and the Yellow River coastal regions from Qinghai to Shanxi, with Ningxia being particularly renowned for its high-quality goji berries.
Goji berries have several well-known names, including "Gou Qi Zi," "Xue Qi Zi," "Xi Qi," and "Jin Qi." These plants are highly adaptable, thriving in drought, poor soil, and saline conditions. They often grow along riverbanks, slopes, and near human settlements. High-quality varieties typically result from natural hybridization. Cultivated varieties in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are stable and widely grown, including the high-yielding types like Ningjing No.1, Ningjing No.2, and Cannabis Leaf. Other notable cultivars include Xiaomaye, Huangguo, Baizhang, and Jian. Some varieties are also known for their yellow leafhoppers and round candied fruits.
Medicinally, goji berries have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 2 meters tall, with a lifespan of 35–50 years. It produces small red or light red fruits, which are rich in nutrients and considered a valuable tonic. Goji berries are known for their ability to nourish the body, strengthen the immune system, improve liver function, and promote longevity.
Historically, goji berries were mentioned in ancient texts such as the "Book of Songs" and referenced by poets like Su Shi during the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, Li Shizhen’s "Compendium of Materia Medica" described various uses of the plant, noting that its roots, stems, flowers, and fruits were all valuable. Traditionally, the fruit was considered a rare and precious medicinal herb rather than a common one.
Modern research has confirmed the health benefits of goji berries, including anti-aging, anti-fatigue, and DNA repair properties. They help increase white blood cell count, enhance lymphocyte conversion, and support immune function. Goji berries are also beneficial for chronic liver and kidney diseases, helping to reduce symptoms and improve overall vitality.
In addition to their medicinal value, goji berries are widely used in food and beverages. For example, in Ningxia, they are commonly used in dishes like spicy fried noodles, buckwheat, and beef porridge. They are also used in traditional foods such as eight-treasure porridge and various rice cakes. Modern products include sugar-free soy milk powder, honey-infused drinks, and concentrated goji honey.
The goji berry processing industry is still in its early stages, with most products sold as dried fruits. However, the market is growing rapidly, with over 30 million kilograms traded annually and an annual growth rate of around 15%. Despite this, the industry faces challenges such as low technological levels and limited processing depth. There is significant potential for further development through advanced processing techniques and product innovation.
