Golden Treasure Matrix Fermentation Aid (Using Sawdust as a Soilless Substrate)
Sawdust is an abundant and cost-effective material that can be used as a soilless growing medium in many regions. It has several advantages when used for soilless cultivation:
The lightweight sawdust matrix is ideal for long-distance transport and high-rise flower cultivation, as its bulk density is similar to that of perlite and vermiculite. This makes it a practical and efficient choice for urban gardening and large-scale operations.
Sawdust has excellent water absorption and drainage properties, making it suitable for plants with thick roots. In areas with high humidity, such as southern cities or coastal regions like Jidandong, the moisture retention of sawdust is well-suited for plant growth. However, in dry northern regions, due to its good permeability, sawdust may dry out too quickly, potentially leading to root desiccation. To prevent this, it's recommended to mix sawdust with peat for better moisture retention.
One challenge with using sawdust is its high carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, which makes it difficult to decompose naturally. It typically takes one to two years for natural fermentation. To speed up the process, a biological starter like Gumbol can be used. Proper management, especially adjusting the C/N ratio, is crucial. Adding a nitrogen source such as urea or poultry manure helps balance the ratio and enhances the fermentation outcome.
Here’s how to prepare the fermented sawdust:
1. **Preparation**: Use 2 cubic meters of sawdust, 1 bag of microbial fermentation agent, 2 kg of urea (or 50-100 kg of poultry manure), and 5 kg of rice bran.
2. **Moisture Adjustment**: Check the moisture content of the sawdust before adding water. The ideal moisture level is 60-65%, which can be roughly estimated by squeezing a handful of sawdust—no water should drip out. If the moisture is too high or too low, it can hinder the fermentation process. Prepare 2 kg of urea mixed with water to create a urea solution.
3. **Mixing**: To make application easier, mix the microbial agent evenly with 5 kg of rice bran, resulting in a 6 kg mixture. This ensures even distribution when added to the sawdust pile. After mixing the inoculant with the sawdust, spray the prepared urea solution over the pile. Then, form a compost heap and cover it with a breathable layer.
4. **Turning**: After 7–10 days, the temperature inside the pile will rise to about 60°C. At this point, turn the pile once and let it rest for 24–36 hours at high temperature. Repeat the turning process once the temperature rises again. After the second turn, leave it undisturbed for 5–7 days until the temperature stabilizes below 40°C. Under normal conditions, the fermentation process takes 25–30 days, though it can extend to 30–45 days if left unturned. For more details, visit the official website or contact us directly.
