In Xinshi Village, located in Maqiao Town, Jingjiang City, some local farmers have successfully implemented a new farming method by combining wheat sprouting with goose rearing. This innovative approach has brought significant benefits to their operations. By using sprouted wheat as feed, the geese show improved feed efficiency, which reduces the overall feeding period by 5 to 10 days. This not only lowers the labor required for feeding but also enhances the economic returns from goose farming.
Typically, one kilogram of wheat can produce 6 to 8 kilograms of sprouted wheat, which is then used to feed commercial geese. To raise 3.5 to 4 kilograms of market-ready geese, farmers need about 4 to 5 kilograms of wheat, 1 kilogram of rapeseed cake, 5 kilograms of rice bran, and a small amount of fish meal. Importantly, this system does not require grazing, making it more sustainable and easier to manage.
The process of sprouting wheat involves soaking the grains in warm water (around 30°C) for 8 hours, followed by draining and placing them in a controlled environment with a temperature of approximately 20°C and suitable humidity. After 6 to 7 days, the sprouts should reach about 6 centimeters in length. The sprouted wheat is then mixed with 8% rapeseed cake (or 5% soybean cake), 25% fine rice bran (or 25% sterilized dried chicken manure), 3% to 5% fish meal (or 0.5% Glauber's salt), 1% bone meal, 0.5% salt, and trace minerals to create a balanced and nutritious feed.
For optimal results, farmers should choose meat-type hybrid breeds such as Lion-Headed geese, Syrup geese, Longchang geese, or Yangzhou geese. These breeds are known for their fast growth and high meat yield. It’s best to start feeding the goslings within 24 to 36 hours after hatching. Before feeding, offering a small amount of sugar water can help stimulate their appetite and aid in expelling meconium.
For the first 1 to 3 days, goslings should be fed 4 to 5 times during the day and 1 to 2 times at night, with each feeding providing 70% to 80% of their capacity. As the goslings grow and their digestive systems mature between 5 to 10 days old, the number of feedings can gradually increase. However, it's crucial to avoid overfeeding—only provide up to 70% of their fullness to ensure they maintain a strong appetite and healthy growth.
This method not only improves feed conversion but also supports better health and faster development of the geese, making it an effective and sustainable practice for small-scale farmers.
