This month marks the transition into early winter, typically around the 7th or 8th of the month, with light snow expected on the 22nd or 23rd. The average temperature hovers around 11°C. Orchids can now be placed in full sunlight without shade, which helps develop strong, sturdy growth and enhances their resistance to disease. This also encourages earlier bud development for the following year. However, mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, with frost appearing regularly. It’s essential to implement frost protection measures. At night, you can cover the plants with shade nets, and if a cold snap is expected, consider bringing them indoors ahead of time.
In the blue room, it's a good time to clean up and reorganize. Normally, Lanyuan (a type of orchid) should be moved to the back of the house where it won't receive direct sunlight. Orchids at the front of the house can be gradually moved further inside as temperatures drop. But during a cold spell, extra precautions must be taken to protect them from damage.
Once the orchids are indoors, they should still be exposed to as much light as possible. Ensure proper ventilation in the blue room—close windows during cold spells, but open them when the weather warms up. There’s no need for heating unless the room becomes icy. Let the orchids experience natural temperature fluctuations; this helps them rest and grow stronger, supporting healthy flowering.
Orchids that have been moved indoors should be allowed to go into dormancy. Avoid disturbing them or using root fertilizers, as this could lead to root rot. You can continue applying foliar sprays or biological fertilizers, preferably in the morning when temperatures are lower. Be careful not to over-spray, as excess moisture can cause leaf decay.
Pests and diseases remain a concern due to the warm environment in the blue house. It’s advisable to spray insecticides and sterilizing agents 2–3 times this month, again in the morning when conditions are more favorable.
During the middle and early parts of the month, bluegrass is still actively growing. Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. Watering should be done in the morning when the sun is out, using water that’s close to room temperature. Avoid overwatering, as orchids are entering dormancy. Hard water should be avoided to prevent root rot.
Indoor orchid areas should maintain a humidity level above 60% to support healthy growth. To achieve this, you can mist the floor, place a small water tray under the shelves, or install an automatic humidifier if possible.
This month is also a good time to repot and propagate orchids. Any unfinished potting work should be completed by mid-month to help the plants recover and encourage early blooming next year.
From September through December, we enter the cold winter season. Now is the time to prepare for the colder months ahead and ensure your orchids are well-protected for the winter.
