Cultivation Techniques of Late-ripening Peach

Yunnan's unique environmental conditions make it an ideal region for cultivating late and winter peaches, which require similar growing conditions to regular peach varieties. The area is located at an altitude of 1800–2100 meters, with an average annual temperature ranging from 12°C to 15°C. It experiences a total accumulated temperature of 4000–4500°C above 10°C, along with an annual rainfall of 800–1000 mm and approximately 2000 hours of annual sunshine. The region also benefits from well-developed irrigation and drainage systems, convenient transportation, and gently flat terrain. The soil is deep, composed of sandy loam or light sandy loam, loose, fertile, and rich in organic matter with a pH level between 5 and 6.5—perfect for peach cultivation. When selecting peach varieties, it’s important to test local performance first. Currently, varieties such as Red Heart Xiantao, Late Red Honey, Peach King Ninety-Nine, Huawanglu, and Chinese Winter Peach No. 2 have shown stable and satisfactory results across most parts of Yunnan. In contrast, varieties like China Shou Tao and Fu Xingshou Peach have performed poorly. Therefore, it’s advisable to conduct trials before making large-scale plantings, focusing on varieties that are well-suited to the local climate, produce high yields, and maintain good quality. To build a modern peach orchard, the goal should be to create a standardized, large-scale, commercialized, and industrialized operation that meets the “four high” requirements: high starting point, high standards, high quality, and high technology. This approach ensures the production of premium peaches that can capture market demand and gain consumer approval. During planting, it's essential to ensure variety purity, strong root systems, proper hole depth, suitable spacing, and a solid foundation for "three minutes" (likely referring to efficient management). After planting, six key aspects—soil, fertilizer, moisture, pruning, pest control, and fruit management—should be carefully addressed. Among these, pest control is the most critical. Due to distinct dry and rainy seasons, the rainy period from June to October coincides with fruit growth, leading to frequent occurrences of diseases such as peach scab, anthracnose, and brown rot, as well as pests like the peach moth, peach borer, and pear fruit fly. These pests cause significant damage, reducing both the quantity and quality of the harvest. Effective pest management is therefore crucial for successful cultivation. Fertilization plays a vital role in ensuring healthy tree growth and high-quality fruit. Peaches require a balanced supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, with a recommended ratio of approximately 1:0.5:1.5 during the annual growth cycle. A lack of potassium can lead to symptoms such as yellowing leaves, early leaf drop, and poor fruit development. From February to May, nitrogen is prioritized to support flowering, leaf development, and young fruit growth. From June to July, phosphorus becomes more important to promote seed development and flower bud differentiation. From August to October, potassium is emphasized to enhance fruit size, sugar content, and coloration. During the growing season, foliar sprays of calcium, magnesium, boron, and zinc are also recommended to supplement trace elements. Late and winter peaches must be visually appealing and free from pest damage, which makes fruit bagging an essential practice. Bagging should be done 50–60 days after flowering, and the bags should be removed 30 days before harvest to allow proper coloring and sugar conversion. Before bagging, a preventive spray of mancozeb (1000 times dilution) combined with insecticide (3000 times dilution), or thiophanate methyl (1500 times) with kung fu (3000 times), is recommended to protect the fruit. The bags used should be double-layered, with a yellow-white outer layer and a black inner layer. They should be medium-thick, flexible, and impermeable, avoiding low-quality materials that may be too thick, brittle, or porous. Other management practices follow those of mid- and early-season peaches.
