This month marks the transition into winter, typically around the 7th or 8th, with light snow occurring on the 22nd or 23rd. The average temperature hovers around 11°C. Orchids can be placed in full sunlight without shade, which promotes strong and sturdy growth. This helps enhance their disease resistance and encourages early bud development for the coming year. However, mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, with frost appearing regularly. It's essential to take anti-frost measures. At night, you can cover the plants with shade nets to protect them. Also, there may be a cold snap during the month, leading to low-temperature frost. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and be ready to bring orchids indoors if necessary.
In the beginning of the month, it's common to move Lanyuan (a type of orchid) to the back of the house where sunlight is limited. Orchids located at the front of the house can be gradually moved indoors as temperatures drop. But during a cold spell, it's crucial to act quickly to prevent damage.
Once orchids are inside, allow them to receive full light while ensuring good ventilation. When a cold front arrives, close the windows. Once the weather warms up, open the windows to let fresh air in. Even in cold weather, heating is unnecessary as long as there's no ice in the room. Let orchids rest according to their natural cycle—this supports healthy growth, strengthens the plant, and promotes blooming.
Orchids that have been brought indoors should enter a dormant phase. Avoid disturbing them and never fertilize using root feed, as this can cause rot. However, foliar sprays with phosphorus or biological fertilizers can continue as usual. Apply these in the morning when temperatures are lower, and avoid over-spraying to prevent water from accumulating in the leaf centers, which could lead to decay.
Due to the higher humidity in the greenhouse, pests and diseases remain a concern. To eliminate hidden threats, apply insecticides and sterilization treatments 2–3 times this month. Spraying should also be done in the morning to maximize effectiveness.
During the middle and early part of the month, bluegrass is still actively growing. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering. Watering should be done in the morning when the sun is out. Use water that’s similar in temperature to the room to avoid shocking the roots. Since orchids are entering dormancy, don’t water excessively. Hard water should be avoided to prevent root rot.
Indoor orchids require consistent humidity, ideally above 60%. To maintain this, you can mist the floor, place a small pool under the shelves, or install an automatic humidifier if possible. These methods help create a favorable environment for the orchids.
This month is also a good time to repot and propagate orchids. Any unfinished potting work should be completed by mid-month to support the recovery of the plants and encourage early bud growth next year.
From September through December, we enter the cold winter season. It’s time to prepare for the harsher weather ahead and ensure our orchids are well protected for the winter months.
