The new method of storage of garlic

Before storage, garlic seeds should be placed in trenches dug at the top of the ground. The trench depth should be between 50 to 60 cm, and the width should range from 60 to 70 cm. The length of the trench can vary depending on the quantity of garlic to be stored. When the local temperature drops to -12°C, it's time to begin the storage process. Two to three days prior to storage, the garlic seeds must be fully dried to reduce their moisture content, which helps prevent rotting during the storage period. When placing the garlic in the trench, a layer of bricks or wooden sticks should be placed at the bottom to elevate the garlic by 5 to 10 cm. Then, the garlic is carefully stacked on top, with a height of 15 to 20 cm above the ground level. After that, cover the garlic with wooden sticks, paper shells, or straw to create an insulating layer. Finally, cover everything with soil to protect against wind and maintain stable temperatures. To monitor the conditions inside the trench, a small tube is tied vertically on one side of the storage area, and a thermometer is placed inside the tube to track temperature changes continuously. The ideal storage temperature should be maintained between 0°C and 10°C. If the temperature falls below -10°C, additional insulation such as straw or hay should be added to keep the garlic warm. As temperatures rise, these materials should be removed promptly to avoid overheating. During winter, after each snowfall, it’s important to clear the snow before it melts to prevent water from seeping into the trench. In early spring, garlic seeds should be taken out 2 to 3 days before planting. After a light drying period, they are ready to be sown. This storage method keeps the garlic seeds at low temperatures (0°C or lower) during storage, effectively slowing down or stopping their respiration, which minimizes nutrient loss. Before planting, the garlic seeds become firm, turn white, and develop uniform new roots. Once planted, the plants grow vigorously, leading to a significant increase in yield. This technique ensures better seed quality and higher agricultural productivity.
