Before storing garlic seeds, it's recommended to dig storage trenches at the top of the ground. The trench should be 50 to 60 cm deep and 60 to 70 cm wide. The length can vary depending on the quantity of garlic to be stored. Once the local temperature drops to -12°C, it's time to begin the storage process. Two to three days before placing the seeds in the trench, they should be fully dried to reduce moisture content and prevent rotting during storage.
When burying the garlic, raise the bottom of the trench using bricks or wooden sticks, about 5 to 10 cm high. Then, pile the garlic seeds on top, keeping the layer between 15 to 20 cm from the surface. Cover the garlic with wooden sticks, paper shells, or grass mats, and then cover them with soil to prevent wind from entering the trench. A small vertical tube is tied to one side of the storage area, and a thermometer is placed inside the tube to monitor temperature changes continuously.
During storage, maintain the temperature within the trench between 0°C and 10°C. If the temperature drops below -10°C, add extra insulation such as straw or hay to keep the garlic warm. When temperatures rise, remove the insulation promptly. After snowfall in winter, clear the snow before it melts to avoid it flowing into the trench and causing damage.
In early spring, remove the garlic seeds 2 to 3 days before planting. After light drying, the seeds can be sown directly. This storage method keeps the garlic seeds in a low-temperature environment (below 0°C), which halts or significantly slows down their respiration, reducing nutrient loss. Before planting, the garlic seeds are firm, white in color, and show even root emergence. After sowing, the plants grow vigorously, leading to a noticeable increase in yield. This technique not only preserves seed quality but also ensures better performance in the field.
