Identification of egg-laying geese and discontinued geese

Geese that are about to start laying eggs show several noticeable signs. Usually around 10 days before they begin, the goose becomes more active and has a strong appetite, especially for green feed. Their feathers appear shiny and lie close to their bodies, with the neck looking particularly tight. The eyes become slightly bulging, and the comb on the head turns yellow. They move quickly, their tails stretch out, and the distance between the pubic bones opens up to about 4 to 5 cm. Their voice becomes softer and lower. Seven days before laying, you may notice some abnormal contamination near the vent. Two to three days before egg-laying, the hen starts to gather grass and prepare a nest. These are all clear indicators that the goose is about to lay eggs.

When the egg production rate reaches 2 or 3%, the esophagus isn't visibly enlarged. However, when the goose is around 35 days into laying, the vent becomes relaxed, and a slight indentation resembling a wine bottle appears. Generally, geese that have just started laying eggs have smooth, moist feathers without any fluffiness. This is a sign of good health and readiness to lay.

To identify geese that have stopped laying eggs, use your left hand to hold the base of both wings, while using your other hand to grip the head and neck. Then, with your right palm, gently push forward along the feathers toward the abdomen. If feathers come off easily during this process, it's an indication that the goose is no longer productive and should be removed from the flock promptly. This method helps in efficiently managing the breeding stock and maintaining high productivity in the flock.
