Recently, at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Anaheim, California, a new technology was proposed by Canadian scientists to place an MRI scanner on a medical linear accelerator. It is reported that the hybrid linear accelerator-MRI prototype aims to provide more accurate radiation therapy for refractory tumors.
Professor Gino Fallone, Director of the Cross Cancer Research Institute at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, presented their progress in hybrid linac-MRI experiments at this month's AAPM meeting.
The Hybrid Linear Accelerator-MRI system is designed to provide real-time image and tumor tracking information while performing image guided conformal radiotherapy. It is designed to improve the accuracy of solid tumor radiotherapy and to provide precise radiotherapy for moving tumor lesions in the lung, liver, stomach, prostate and pancreas.
System developers also hope that it will minimize the radiation dose of normal tissue around the tumor while ensuring that the entire tumor has been completely irradiated. Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
