On the 23rd, the PLA General Hospital successfully conducted a brain tumor resection surgery using the third-generation intraoperative MRI (iMRI) system. This advanced technology allows for real-time imaging during the operation, significantly enhancing surgical precision and patient safety.
Intraoperative MRI refers to magnetic resonance imaging performed during surgery. The second-generation iMRI required moving the operating room to the MRI suite, which was time-consuming and risky. However, the third-generation iMRI brings the MRI machine directly into the operating room, utilizing mobile magnets that eliminate the need to transport the patient during the procedure. This advancement not only improves safety but also makes the system more practical for everyday clinical use.
MRI systems are typically categorized based on magnetic field strength: low-field and high-field. High-field systems offer superior image quality and enhanced functionality, making them the preferred choice in modern neurosurgical practices worldwide.
According to Professor Xu Bainan, head of the Neurosurgery Department at the PLA General Hospital, the introduction of third-generation iMRI has greatly improved the accuracy of the navigation system. By providing high-quality, real-time images during surgery, neurosurgeons can precisely track the extent of tumor removal, ensuring maximum tumor excision while preserving critical brain structures. Additionally, doctors can assess the overall condition of the brain, such as checking for signs of hemorrhage or hydrocephalus, and adjust their surgical approach accordingly. This comprehensive view enhances decision-making and leads to better patient outcomes.
