Lily is a unique and highly valued plant in China, known for its ornamental beauty and culinary use. It has gained significant popularity in the international flower market due to its high demand and wide range of applications. Therefore, it's worth promoting large-scale cultivation and breeding efforts.
There are four common methods for lily propagation: seed sowing, bulb division, scale cutting, and bud division. Each method has its own advantages and is suitable for different purposes and conditions.
(1) Seed propagation is a sexual reproduction method primarily used in breeding programs. The process involves collecting seeds in the fall and storing them until spring for planting. After sowing, germination usually occurs within about two weeks. Seedlings should be protected from direct sunlight. By the following fall, small bulbs will form underground, and the plants can be dug up and replanted. However, the time required for flowering varies depending on the species—some may bloom in as little as three years, while others take much longer. This makes seed propagation less efficient for commercial purposes.
(2) Small bulb propagation is ideal for growing a few strains or varieties at home. When lilies are harvested in September or October, small bulbs often form around the base of the old bulb. These can be separated, stored in sand indoors during winter, and planted in pots in the following spring. By the third year, they can develop into mature bulbs and full plants. This method is limited in quantity and best suited for family-level propagation.
(3) Scale cutting is a popular method for medium-scale cultivation. In the fall, fully developed bulbs are dug up, and thick, healthy scales are carefully removed. Each scale should include a small portion of the stem and plate. After drying slightly, the scales are placed in pots filled with river sand or vermiculite. They are inserted about two-thirds into the substrate, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Under a temperature of around 18°C, roots typically develop within one and a half months. During winter, the sand should remain slightly dry. In the following spring, small bulbs will form at the base of the scales, which can then be separated and transplanted into new pots. With proper care, these plants can bloom within a year.
(4) Bud division is suitable for certain lily species, such as the Lilium brownii and Lilium dauricum. This method involves using the small bulblets that form on the stems and leaves during summer, known as "bead bulbs." These are usually ready to be harvested before they naturally detach. It takes about 2 to 4 years from the formation of the bead bulbs to the point of flowering. To encourage more buds, after the plant flowers, the above-ground stems can be partially buried in soil or cut into sections and placed in wet sand. This helps the bead bulbs grow between the leaves and the buds, increasing the chances of successful propagation.
