"Sishui" Plant Feeding Pigs "Three Musts"

The "four water" plants—water hyacinths, water peanuts, water lettuces, and oleasters—are commonly used as feed for pigs due to their high nutrient content. However, while these aquatic plants can be beneficial, they also carry risks if not handled properly. Long-term feeding of such plants can expose pigs to parasites like ginger flukes and aphids, which can hinder growth, cause illness, and in severe cases, even lead to death. To ensure safe and effective use, farmers should follow the "three musts" when feeding pigs with aquatic plants. First, always sterilize the water where the aquatic plants are grown. This helps eliminate harmful pathogens. A 1:5000 copper sulfate solution or 0.1% lime water is typically used to disinfect the ponds. These treatments help kill the intermediate hosts of certain parasites, such as the flat snail that carries ginger fluke larvae. Additionally, it's important to avoid using raw human or animal manure directly on the aquatic plants. Instead, any manure used should be fully decomposed through high-temperature fermentation, which effectively kills parasite eggs and other contaminants. Second, always ferment the aquatic feed before feeding it to pigs. Fermentation not only improves digestibility but also helps destroy parasite eggs. The process involves washing, drying, and chopping the plants. Then, mix them with ingredients like gluten, bran, and a small amount of distiller’s yeast (about 3–5% of the total weight) along with some water. Let the mixture ferment for 2–3 days. After the first fermentation, you can skip the yeast and instead use a small portion of previously fermented feed as a starter for the next batch. Third, always take measures to repel insects, as long-term feeding with aquatic plants can attract pests. Regular deworming is essential. Farmers should administer an insecticide every two months, mixing it into the feed at a rate of 10 mg per kilogram of body weight. It's best to give the medication on an empty stomach for maximum effectiveness. By following these three key steps, farmers can safely utilize the nutritional benefits of aquatic plants while minimizing health risks to their pigs. This approach not only promotes better pig health but also enhances overall productivity.
