Pediatric congenital heart surgery has innovation

Release date: 2007-07-16

At the annual meeting of the American Thoracic Surgery Association, the most prestigious international forum for cardiovascular surgery, a groundbreaking presentation from mainland China made waves in the field of pediatric congenital heart disease. Professor Hu Shengshou of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences presented a paper titled “Double Ventricular Outflow Reconstruction Strategy and Surgical Choice,” which received widespread recognition from global experts. This marked a significant milestone for Chinese medical research on the world stage.

In a normal human heart, the aorta is connected to the left ventricle, but some children are born with a rare condition where the aorta is incorrectly connected to the right ventricle, while the left ventricular outflow tract is also narrowed. This leads to severe hypoxia, cyanosis, and loss of motor function. Without timely treatment, these children often do not survive past childhood. Traditional aortic transfer surgeries are not effective for this complex congenital defect.

In April 2004, the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Center at Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital pioneered a revolutionary surgical technique known as "Aortic Root Transposition." This procedure simultaneously reconstructs both the left and right ventricular outflow tracts, offering a new hope for affected children. Dr. Liu Zhigang, a leading surgeon at the center, explained that the surgery is extremely complex. It involves repositioning the aorta and pulmonary artery, carefully reattaching the coronary arteries, and preserving the child’s own valves and collateral vessels. The goal is to achieve a complete anatomical correction, allowing the reconstructed blood pathways and tissues to grow naturally with the child. This significantly reduces the need for future surgeries and greatly improves the child's long-term quality of life.

As of April 2007, the Fuwai Hospital had successfully performed 20 consecutive cases of this corrective surgery, demonstrating remarkable outcomes and setting a new standard in pediatric cardiac care. This achievement highlights the growing influence of Chinese medical innovation on the global healthcare landscape. ——Midi Medical Network
