Symptoms and Prevention of Shoot Blight of Yangmei

Also known as lobular shoot disease, this condition primarily affects the branches of affected plants. Infected plants typically exhibit a range of symptoms, including clustered, lobular shoots, dry and withered shoots, a lack of fruit production or very limited yields, shortened internodes, and atrophied new shoot tips. The leaves are small, dark in color, dull in appearance, and often feel hard and crisp to the touch. This disease is a physiological disorder caused by a deficiency in boron, and it tends to be more prevalent in purple soils. To manage the issue, it's recommended to spray the plants with a 0.2% borax solution before flowering, or alternatively, use a mixture of borax and 0.4% urea. Additionally, increasing the application of organic fertilizers can help reduce the occurrence of the disease. Proper soil management and regular monitoring of nutrient levels are essential for long-term prevention and control. It’s also important to ensure balanced nutrition and avoid overuse of nitrogen-rich fertilizers, which may exacerbate boron deficiency. Early intervention is key to minimizing damage and maintaining plant health.
