It is smaller than both the Nile tilapia and the longevity fish and has a slower growth rate. Juvenile fish display 6–7 dark vertical stripes on their sides, which fade as they mature. During the non-breeding season, their body color is generally dark gray. In contrast, during the breeding period, males turn a deep green with red edges on their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, while females remain gray-yellow with similar vertical markings that become less visible as they grow. 2. **Nile Tilapia**: This is one of the largest tilapia species, with some individuals reaching up to 5.5 kg in their native habitat. They grow rapidly, reaching 12 cm in length within a few months. By their first year of life, they can weigh around 700 grams. The body color is yellow-brown on the back and silvery on the belly. They have 8–10 black vertical bands along the sides and black dorsal fins. Males show distinct reddish edges on their anal and caudal fins during spawning, with 8–10 vertical black stripes on their tail fins. 3. **S. frugiperda (Hybrid Strain)**: This is a cross between female Nile tilapia and male Mozambique tilapia. It resembles the Nile tilapia in appearance, often displaying a dark greenish coloration. It matures relatively quickly, reaching sexual maturity in about 100–150 days after hatching. As an omnivorous species, it feeds mainly on plankton and organic debris. Its growth performance is excellent, with adult sizes often exceeding those of the female parent by more than 100% and surpassing the male parent by about 20%. Some individuals can grow to 1–2 kg, with the fastest growth occurring under 300 grams. Artificial breeding of tilapia involves careful preparation of the environment and broodstock selection. Since tilapia are nest-builders, the bottom of the breeding pond should consist of loam or sandy loam soil. Broodstock should be healthy, disease-free, and free from physical injuries, with weights ranging from 150 to 450 grams. A stocking density of 300–400 fish per mu is recommended, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1 to 3:1. Tilapia are known for their early sexual maturity and short reproductive cycle, with eggs hatching inside the female’s mouth. Breeding conditions are not overly strict, and even small hydrostatic ponds can support reproduction. In the Yangtze River basin, Mozambique tilapia and longevity fish can reach sexual maturity within 3–4 months after being released from wintering. After wintering, the broodstock may be thinner, so it's important to intensify feeding before spawning to enhance gonad development. Every 1–2 days, 50 kg of organic fertilizer should be applied, along with rice bran or bean dregs as supplementary feed. The feeding amount should be approximately 3% of the broodstock's body weight. Once the water temperature reaches 22–23°C, the tilapia begin to spawn. Fertilized eggs are retained in the female’s mouth and hatch within 5–7 days at 25°C. The fry remain in the mother’s mouth until their yolk sac is absorbed and they develop the ability to swim and feed independently. At this point, small groups of fry can be observed near the pond’s edge, signaling the start of fry cultivation.
