Plos Pothgens: mosquito intestinal bacteria can be used to treat diseases such as dengue fever

Release date: 2014-11-05

It is well known that there are a large number of microorganisms in the human intestines, which play an extremely important role in maintaining the balance of the human body environment. Different diseases directly affect the composition of human microbes and endanger human health. Similarly, there are also a large number of bacteria in the intestines of mosquitoes.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States have recently discovered that some bacteria in the intestines of mosquitoes may be used to treat tropical diseases such as dengue and malaria. This research was published in PLOS Pathogens. The researchers isolated a bacterium called Csp_P in the intestines of mosquitoes, which belongs to the family of staining bacilli. In vitro experiments have shown that this bacterium can inhibit the pathogens of dengue and malaria to varying degrees and shorten the mosquito life cycle of the two pathogens.
When scientists use the bacteria to infect mosquitoes that can transmit dengue or malaria, their ability to transmit diseases is diminished; when Csp_P is used directly against Plasmodium and dengue viruses, the researchers have significantly reduced the toxicity of both pathogens. . Scientists have analyzed that this may be due to Csp_P producing a metabolic substance that inhibits both pathogens.
