TI offers the best noise performance and lowest power ADC for medical imaging applications

Texas Instruments (TI) today announced an 80 MSPS, 8-channel 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with the industry's best noise performance and lowest power consumption. The ADS5294 supports 75.5 dBFS best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at 5 MHz and a sampling rate of up to 80 MSPS to meet the designer's need for high power efficiency and low cost designs. The ADS5294 delivers high performance at 80 MSPS and delivers the lowest power consumption of 77 mW per channel. It also integrates digital processing blocks, low frequency noise rejection modes, and programmable input-to-output mapping. All of these features help designers integrate more features into smaller packages to develop smaller medical imaging systems.

Main features and advantages

Industry-leading low-noise, low-power performance: The ADS5294 offers the best SNR in its class, helping high-density application designers increase channel count without increasing power consumption;

SNR is 75.5 dBFS at 5 MHz/80 MSPS

SNR is 78.2 dBFS at 5 MHz with decimation filter enabled

SFDR is 84 dBc at 5 MHz/80 MSPS

Power consumption per unit channel at 77 MSPS 77 mW (two LVDS lines per channel)

Low frequency noise suppression mode

The digital processing block integrates several common system functions, such as two- or four-channel averaging or decimation with 2, 4 or 8 filters;

Digital processing blocks can be used to dramatically increase SNR and filter harmonics while reducing the rate of output data in narrowband applications;

Two-wire LVDS interface: With the ADS5294, digital data can be output on a single- or two-wire LVDS pin per channel, reducing the number of interface lines. This creates a two-wire interface that maintains a low serial data rate, enabling designers to use low-cost FPGAs;

In addition to medical imaging systems, the ADS5294 offers the same benefits for radar, communications, measurement testing, and other multi-channel data acquisition applications.

Availability and packaging

The ADS5294 is available now in a 12 mm x 12 mm, 80-pin QFP package.

Tools and support

Providing a flexible environment for testing the ADS5294 in a variety of situations, the Evaluation Board (EVM) is available now. The ADS5294 EVM can be ordered through the following sites.

An IBIS model to verify board signal integrity requirements is now available.

Highly optimized range of analog and medical applications

The ADS5294 is the latest addition to TI's highly optimized analog products to meet the needs of medical imaging systems and other medical applications. include:

Ultrasound: The AFE58xx series of analog front ends for ultrasonic applications provide AFE5801 and AFE5851 for handheld systems, AFE5805 and AFE5804 for portable to mid-range systems, and AFE5807 and AFE5808 for high-end ultrasound systems. The TI TX810 T/R switch complements the emitters of all products;

ECG/EEG: The ADS1298 Series front end delivers the lowest power and highest level of integration for electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG), and other patient monitoring applications.

TI's full range of semiconductor applications for medical applications, including embedded processors such as DSPs and MCUs, rich analog signal chains, power management and wireless connectivity solutions, help manufacturers accelerate the time-to-market of medical electronics.
