Chinese medicine treatment for non-small cell lung cancer enters clinical research stage

The "Research on Comprehensive Treatment Program for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Using Traditional Chinese Medicine" is a key project under the National Eleventh Five-Year Science and Technology Support Program. Currently, it is actively conducting multi-center clinical trials across China. This research initiative has been officially approved by both the Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Leading this effort are Professors Lin Hongsheng and Hua Baojin from the Oncology Department at Guang'anmen Hospital, affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They are coordinating multiple research institutions nationwide, aiming to develop a comprehensive and evidence-based Chinese medicine treatment plan for non-small cell lung cancer that can be widely adopted and recognized. According to recent reports, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 80% of all lung cancer cases. As a critical component of lung cancer treatment in China, the integration of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) into standard care has shown promising results. Therefore, establishing standardized TCM treatment protocols and clinical guidelines for NSCLC is urgently needed. Previous studies have demonstrated that combining TCM with conventional therapies like radiotherapy and chemotherapy can enhance treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects. Additionally, post-surgical TCM interventions have been found to delay tumor recurrence and metastasis, ultimately improving patient survival rates. This research project has not only received support from national authorities but also collaborates closely with international institutions such as Columbia University and the National Cancer Institute. Such partnerships help ensure that the findings are aligned with global standards and contribute to the broader scientific community's understanding of TCM in oncology. The ultimate goal is to create a scientifically validated, holistic treatment approach that can be applied in clinical practice and benefit patients nationwide.
