A recent study conducted by American scientists has revealed that a natural antioxidant found in fruits, vegetables, and red wine may offer a promising new approach to treating leukemia. The compound, known as anthocyanin, has shown the ability to selectively destroy blood cancer cells without harming healthy ones.
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania published their findings in the American Journal of Biochemistry. They focused on a specific form of anthocyanin called anthocyanin-3-ruthenose (C-3-R), which they extracted from black raspberries. By studying how C-3-R interacts with leukemia cells, the team discovered its potential as a powerful anti-cancer agent.
In laboratory experiments, even low doses of C-3-R were able to eliminate half of the leukemia cells within just 18 hours. At higher concentrations, the compound was capable of killing all the cancerous cells in the same time frame. These results were consistent across multiple types of leukemia, suggesting a broad application potential.
The researchers believe that C-3-R works by triggering the production of peroxides inside cancer cells. These peroxides are toxic to the malignant cells but do not affect normal, healthy cells. This selective targeting is a major advantage over traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, which often damage healthy tissue and cause severe side effects.
Given the encouraging results, U.S. medical experts are now exploring the possibility of translating these findings into clinical practice. If successful, this natural compound could offer a safer and more effective treatment option for leukemia patients in the future.
