Wheat aphids are one of the most significant pests affecting wheat production, and severe infestations can reduce yields by over 20%. According to the latest survey conducted by the Plant Protection Station in Beichen District, on April 27th, the average number of aphid colonies per plant was 2.8, with a maximum of 100 aphids observed. All of them were wingless. By April 30th, the average number had increased significantly to 100.9 aphids per plant, with the highest count reaching 300. Among these, 6% were winged, 94% were wingless, and 3% were malformed or not fully developed.
With limited rainfall this spring and temperatures gradually rising, conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for wheat aphid reproduction and population growth. To ensure effective control, centralized prevention and control measures should be implemented as soon as possible. The recommended threshold for action is when there are 500 aphids per 100 wheat plants. It is advised to start treatment around May 15th, which is considered the optimal time for intervention.
Control methods include:
1. Spraying with 40% Dimethoate EC diluted at a ratio of 2000–3000 times.
2. Using 10% Imidacloprid at a rate of 20–30 grams per 30 liters of water.
3. Applying 50–70 ml of 40.7% insecticide per acre.
Farmers are encouraged to monitor their fields regularly and take prompt action once the threshold is reached. Early intervention can significantly reduce damage and improve overall crop yield. It is also important to follow safety guidelines when applying pesticides to protect both the environment and agricultural workers.
