Japan has discovered that an immune cell can kill it from cancer cells.

Release date: 2010-09-20

The Linyuan Institute of Biochemistry in Japan recently announced that its researchers have developed an immune cell that can enter cancer cells and kill them from the inside. This is a completely different mechanism from externally attacking cancer cells and is expected to be used in new anticancer therapies.
What kills cancer cells in this way is an immune cell called "HOZOT", which was made by researchers in 2006 by culturing white blood cells in cord blood.
The researcher of the institute, Mr. Takeuchi and colleagues found in the test tube that "HOZOT" cells will select cancer cells and invade without entering normal cells. When "HOZOT" cells are mixed with human breast cancer, gastric cancer, and colon cancer cells, "HOZOT" cells move toward cancer cells and attach to cancer cells, and then the entire "HOZOT" cells invade cancer cells. In the next about 2 to 4 hours, "HOZOT" cells will gradually kill cancer cells.
Researchers believe that the cancer-causing protein carried by "HOZOT" cells spreads inside cancer cells, destroying the structure of cancer cells and causing them to die.
Takeuchi Takeuchi pointed out: "This is a way to sneak into the opponent and kill the opponent like a Trojan horse. I hope to use the blood of cancer patients in the future to develop cells with the same functions as 'HOZOT' cells for treatment. Cancers that are difficult to function with chemotherapeutic drugs are also expected to use 'HOZOT' cells to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs directly to cancer cells."
Currently, "HOZOT" cells are far from being able to invade all kinds of cancer cells. The researchers are preparing to continue experiments with mice to increase the chances of "HOZOT" cells invading cancer cells and to conduct clinical trials five years later.
