According to the latest "Science - Translational Medicine" magazine, researchers have discovered how to use biochemical methods to accelerate the healing of broken bones in mice.
From enhancing bone grafting to accelerating the repair of fractures in patients, these findings are widely used in regenerative medicine for millions of patients who need to be hospitalized each year because of a fracture. In humans and mice, Wnt protein is required for both normal bone renewal and post-injury healing. Steven Minear and colleagues found that Wnt proteins play a role by activating bone stem cells, which function to produce new bone.
Researchers can accelerate bone healing by amplifying this natural repair process in genetically modified mice. Gene modification to enhance the Wnt protein signal allows the bone stem cells at the lesion to divide more rapidly and mature into osteoblasts more rapidly than in normal mice. The researchers then created a substance called the liposome Wnt3a, which produces the same effect without genetic modification. Injecting liposomal Wnt3a into mice can accelerate bone repair again by stimulating more division and faster maturation of bone cells, but this effect is only temporary and only occurs at the site of injury. This finding is important because uncontrolled Wnt signaling can cause side effects such as excessive bone formation. The researchers plan to use a Wnt-like approach to improve tissue regeneration after skin damage, stroke, and myocardial infarction.
