Autumn corn management "five taboos"

Autumn corn has a short growth period and is vulnerable to drought, high temperatures, cold snaps later in the season, as well as diseases and pests. This can lead to small ears or even barren tassels with little grain. To ensure a good harvest, it's essential to manage what's known as the "five critical stages." First, water management is crucial during the first 10 days after tasseling to the next 20 days, which is the most sensitive period for water demand. If soil moisture drops below 60%, seedlings may be damaged, leading to weak growth and poor pollination. It's best to plant in paddy fields with irrigation access. If the soil lacks moisture, watering should be done immediately to prevent bud death. During the jointing stage, soil moisture should be maintained at around 70%. If leaves begin to curl, immediate action is needed to protect the crop. During the tasseling phase, if drought occurs, irrigation can increase yield by more than 30% compared to non-irrigated fields. Artificial pollination is also effective—when silks appear, perform hand pollination between 9 AM and 11 AM, once every other day for three to four times. Avoid sowing too late. If tasseling occurs after September 20, the plants are at risk of cold damage. Temperatures below 20°C can block fertilization, resulting in poor kernel development. Therefore, it's recommended to sow early, ideally by the beginning of August. Late planting can expose the crop to high temperatures and shorter daylight hours, which can shorten the vegetative growth period. To compensate, increasing plant density is important. A spacing of 46 cm wide rows, 33 cm narrow rows, and 22 cm between plants (about 5,500 plants per mu) helps maximize yield. Fertilization should not be delayed. Autumn corn requires early nutrient application, typically in two stages: one during the jointing phase and another during the "big bell-mouth" stage. If nutrients are low, applying fertilizer during the jointing phase can help develop the young tassel. Base fertilizer should be applied before planting, followed by 5 kg of urea and 5 kg of potassium when the plant has 4–5 leaves. At the 8–9 leaf stage, apply 45% compound fertilizer (around 15 kg per mu), combined with irrigation or direct application. Insect pests like corn borers and aphids can cause serious damage. During the seedling stage and the big bell-mouth period, use 3% carbofuran mixed with 1.5 kg of dried loess per acre to control borers. For aphids, a solution of 10% osmium net diluted 2,500–3,000 times, combined with a new fat film, is effective. In paddy fields, sheath blight and other diseases must also be monitored and controlled. (Source: China Plant Protection Network, Wei Linfei)
