Popular Science: Tomatoes, Apples Can Help Quit Smoking

A new study found that if you eat fresh tomatoes and apples and other fruits in the daily routine after quitting smoking, you can help repair lung function.

Researchers at the Imperial College of Technology in the United Kingdom, the Johns Hopkins-Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States published the research paper in a new issue of the European Journal of Respiratory Medicine.

In a 10-year follow-up survey, researchers conducted lung function tests and dietary surveys on more than 650 adults from Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. As a result, it was found that after the adult quit smoking, if the diet is rich in tomatoes and fruits (especially apples), lung function declines more slowly.

Specifically, compared with those who eat less than one tomato or less than one fruit per day, the average person who eats more than two tomatoes or more than three fresh fruits per day, the lung function declines more slowly.

The researchers believe that some of the ingredients in this type of food may help repair lung damage caused by smoking. They stressed that the way of eating tomatoes or fruits is very important. Only fresh tomatoes and fruits can protect the lungs. If it is taken from a dish or processed food, no such effect is observed.

They also found that whether or not smokers used to eat tomatoes in their daily diet can help reduce the decline in lung function, but the effects are even more pronounced in those who quit smoking.

Vanessa Garcia-Lassen, an assistant professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health who participated in the study, said that their research shows that for those who have quit smoking, diet can indeed help repair lung damage. More importantly, even non-smokers who eat more fruits can delay the natural aging process in the lungs.
