Summer feed for laying hens should be adjusted

In hot weather, when the ambient temperature rises above 25°C, laying hens tend to reduce their energy intake as a way to lower internal heat production. This can lead to inadequate nutrient consumption, which in turn affects egg production performance. To counter this, it's essential to adjust the diet by increasing the concentration of nutrients. One effective strategy is to replace some carbohydrates with animal and vegetable fats, adding 1-2% of fat or oil to the feed as an energy source. At the same time, the protein level in the diet should be increased by 1-2%, while ensuring that the balance of amino acids remains optimal for the hens' health and productivity. Juicy green feeds are highly palatable and rich in essential vitamins, making them an excellent addition to the diet. They not only improve feed intake but also support overall health and help prevent heat stress in laying hens. Eggshell formation primarily occurs during the late afternoon and evening. Therefore, it's beneficial to provide hens with limestone or shell powder in the afternoon. This helps strengthen the shells and reduces the negative effects of heat stress on the birds. During summer, the early morning and late evening hours tend to have cooler temperatures, which makes hens more active and increases their appetite. To maximize feed utilization, feeding schedules can be adjusted to include one feeding just before turning off the lights in the morning and another before lights out at night. This ensures that hens consume more feed when they are most hungry, helping maintain their energy levels and egg production throughout the hot season.
